I’m Matthew Sheehy; I grew up just outside of Union, OR where I still live. My family raises sheep and grows grass hay and alfalfa. I’ve been working at a local farm and a pizza restaurant over the past six years. I’ve grown a love for hiking and being in the wilderness from spending time in the local mountains. I’ve gone on to hike thousands of miles on long distance hiking trails through both Spain and New Zealand, and have been to 15 different countries while solo traveling.

I became an MAI Land Stewards Intern because I wanted to try something new and I wanted a change from my current job. I also wanted to take care of the public lands that I’ve spent a lot of time exploring. I’m most excited to spend time working in and further exploring such a beautiful part of the world. I’m hoping to learn more about the work that goes into trail maintenance, and the preservation of public lands, while also gaining new skills and knowledge that come with the job.
