As an organization focused on connecting people to the natural world, the Mt. Adams Institute is committed to opening up opportunities for individuals from all walks of life with a wide variety of skills and interests. Within our VetsWork program we have 18 AmeriCorps Internship positions with Federal, State, and local agencies that all have one thing in common. They all, in some way, support sustainable management of our natural resources. Beyond that connecting principle, the positions have a full and varied spectrum of skills and focus areas. Although we have internships that are primarily direct, hands-on, project based positions we also have supporting roles that focus on communicating the outstanding work of our partner agencies to the general public.
In the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, there are two such positions. These are the Writer/Analyst Interns (one with the Whitman Ranger District and the other with Wallowa Valley Ranger District) and the Outreach Analyst Intern with the Forest Supervisor’s Office in Baker City. All of these positions require refined written and spoken communication skills. They require a desire to clearly and effectively analyze critical information drawn from extensive field work and communicate that efficiently and effectively to the community at large. It takes a well-organized and detailed person to compile the information in a way that speaks to our community and draws them into the mission of the Forest Service, which is to is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.
While the Forest Service (and our nations natural resources) need people in the field completing preservation and restoration projects, they also need talented individuals who know how to reach out to the community and tell the story of the ongoing work of our land management agencies. Here are three amazing opportunities to use your skills to support those efforts. You have a valuable skill. Put it to use in a VetsWork AmeriCorps Internship.
