My name is Lupe Sturgis Zavala. I grew up in southern Texas, for those who know the area it’s the Rio Grande Valley. My upbringing was rough to say the least. I lost my father at the age of 12, spending my birthday at his service. But I had an amazing mother who took very good care of me and my sister providing us a beautiful childhood. I’m super excited for this opportunity because I love the thought of being able to explore the outdoor wonders Washington has to offer because Texas was a completely different environment. I served 5 and 1/2 years in the Navy, which consisted of 3 deployments and 4 detachment. (To much time away from family for me). I loved my job as a parachute rigger but I love the idea of being around more for my 2 year old daughter. I grew up with one parent who spent a lot of time working to try and put food on the table; seeing my mother go through that motivated me to be that annoying parent at every single function. My wife and I have had a very tough decision to make but we decided to try our best to give Washington a chance because it would be a blessing to be successful on our own in a new state with only ourselves. I decided to attempt to obtain this internship because it was offered to vets and I really appreciated that opportunity. As well as bringing me closer to the whole reason my wife and I decided to stay out here in the first place; which was to explore more and appreciate nature. I’m honestly just genuinely excited about this whole experience that I have a head of me. If I had to pick one it would be the opportunity to networks with a group of people I didn’t see myself being able to have real job conversation with. My hope is to fit in as well as possible and contribute as much as I can.
