My name is Matthew Blees. I grew up in a small town of rural Pennsylvania. I have always loved hiking, fishing and anything that would bring me outdoors. I’m retired from the United States Navy. I started college working towards a computer science degree, and was working in a field that complimented that line of work. Deep down, I have always wanted to get involved in a job that connected me to the outdoor world. I found the opportunity of a lifetime with the Mt. Adams Institute and pursued it.

Being a VetsWork AmeriCorps intern has allowed me to get involved in a career field that provides a sense of place and allows me to give back to the community. It has been an amazing experience.

Throughout my internship with the Forest Service, I have been able to work with the recreation team and district biologists, spending a lot of time on heavy equipment doing wildlife clearings, cleaning recreation areas, trenching and cleaning flooded areas, and helping to improve sites for the public. Every day has been an incredible experience, and I’m truly thankful the Mt. Adams Institute has given me this opportunity.
