To Mt. Adams Institute Community of Partners, Sponsors, Alumni, and Friends:
On behalf of Mt. Adams Institute (MAI) Board of Directors, I’m writing to share an important update. After extensive reflection and careful consideration, the Board voted to cease MAI operations and dissolve the organization effective December 31, 2026.
This decision was not made lightly. The past year has been extremely challenging for MAI. It began with severe cutbacks affecting our federal partners and was compounded with the unforeseen loss of AmeriCorps funding. This was a major blow as MAI’s programs depend mostly on federal funding.
MAI’s Executive Director reacted quickly and decisively. He made the painful decision to lay off 60% of the MAI staff. Working with the Board, he then led the development of a plan that shifted MAI’s business model from one based on federal grants to one based on fees-for-service. The initial success of this new model gave the Board confidence that MAI would be able to continue its mission on into the future.
However, two key staff members subsequently announced their decision to leave the organization. The confluence of the losses of federal funding and critical institutional knowledge created circumstances under which continued operation is no longer feasible.
In accordance with MAI’s Articles of Incorporation and Article XIII of MAI’s Bylaws, the Executive Director prepared a plan of dissolution. He presented this plan to the Board in an emergency session convened for that purpose on January 28th. Nine of the Board’s eleven members were in attendance. After much discussion all nine voted to approve the plan.
Everyone on the Board deeply regrets needing to take this action. The decision to dissolve reflects both the funding realities facing our federal partners and the impact of key personnel changes. Further details may be found in the Executive Director’s statement found here: Executive Director’s Statement
There is much work yet to be done. For now, I’ll close by acknowledging the incredible work of the MAI staff who have worked tirelessly to carry out the organization’s mission over the years. I also want to thank all of you who have been associated with and supportive of MAI’s programs. It is an honor to serve this wonderful community.
With warm regards and best wishes for all,
Eric T. (Rick) Mogren
Chair, Mt. Adams Institute Board of Directors
