2025 VetsWork: Carl Cruz

by | Field Notes, VetsWork, VW 2025

Hello, my name is Carl, and I’m from Hillsboro, Oregon. I served in the Air Force for seven years, stationed in South Dakota and Okinawa, Japan. During that time, I developed a passion for activities like photography, hiking, camping, rock climbing, and especially fly fishing, which remains one of my favorite hobbies. After separating from the Air Force in 2019, my love for fly fishing inspired me to pursue a degree in Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology, with a focus on Fish and Aquatic Science at Colorado State University. I graduated last March, and shortly after, my wife, dog, and cat made the decision to return to Oregon for better job opportunities for both of us. Since coming back, I’ve continued to embrace the outdoor lifestyle and look forward to discovering even more of what Oregon has to offer.

While searching for job opportunities, I came across the position of Salmon Recovery Specialist and was immediately drawn to Mt. Adams Institute. After researching the organization, I found that its mission of strengthening the connection between people and the natural world aligns perfectly with my values. Throughout my studies and post-graduation experiences, I’ve had the opportunity to engage in fieldwork within fisheries, but I’m eager to learn more about what happens after data collection. I believe this position offers the ideal opportunity to grow professionally by enhancing my knowledge in fisheries science and policy, connecting with various agencies and communities, and contributing to outreach efforts that bridge the gap between people and the natural world.
