Hello, my name is Sean West. My mother instilled an appreciation for the outdoors and our public lands when I was growing up. From rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking, to a simple overnight car camping trip, we eagerly explored the Midwest, where I was raised. When I entered the Air Force in 2011, these experiences continued to fuel and keep me centered throughout my 11-year career. I was fortunate enough to be stationed in Colorado and Washington, which resulted in me completely falling in love with the Western U.S. After deciding to leave Active Duty in 2022, I participated in a construction internship with the National Park Service at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which I hoped would ultimately lead me to a career with our public lands. However, I eventually took a General Contracting job in Seattle for the last two years.
As work in Seattle began to slow down, I explored more internship opportunities to partner with our public land agencies, and that’s how I found the VetsWork program through the Mt. Adams Institute. I was struck by the locations and positions available, along with the program’s longer duration. When relocation of my job from Seattle became imminent, I decided to take the leap and give the program a chance. Through this opportunity, I am incredibly excited to align my professional goals with preserving and maintaining the public lands that have supported me throughout my life. I am also eager to do so alongside a team of people who share that passion and drive. Above all, I believe this program will equip me with the experience, networking, and drive to pursue a career as a public land steward.
