Since I started working for the Malheur National Forest through the VetsWork program, I have had many different experiences and have learned new skills. One day, we were called out to assess a bridge that had been flooded due to a large sinkhole, which formed during the heavy snowmelt this past winter. We did a thorough assessment finding that water had gotten in and eroded it out from underneath the road. Due to a poor existing road foundation, we ended up returning to dig out the road and eventually refilled it properly. Learning how to repair a sinkhole was an invaluable experience and it was very fun getting to be out in the field, repairing something to keep vehicle traffic going and making a difference in the local lives of people in the surrounding area.
