Getting warmed up and accustomed to the new work environment here in Crescent has been a very valuable learning lesson and a great step in the direction of feeling confident and cable in the Forest Service. In just the couple months that I have been in my new position as a VetsWork AmeriCorps intern I have been able to take part in many awesome experiences and meet many new people that will help me in the months to come as well as hopefully help build a career as a whole, later in the future. Some of these experiences I have been able to take part in include eagle nest surveys, public meetings with utility companies, a visit to the local school on behalf of the Forest Service, field work surveying road conditions, and a week-long intensive training on Water Rights in Prineville Oregon, just to name a few.
Although Crescent experienced a very late winter, and snow conditions have kept things a little held up at the Ranger Station, eagle nest surveys and road surveys at lower elevations was a great way to get in the field right off the bat in April. Being outside gave me the opportunity to become more familiar with the district and learn the ropes on how to complete surveys, obtain a Forest Service driver’s license, and all around have a great time being outdoors! On the other hand, working with the special uses and recreation departments meant being able to get out and meet permittees and stakeholders at MidState Electric Company, recruit kids at the local school for Youth Conservation Corps, and gain very valuable, intensive, and in-depth knowledge on Oregon Water Rights at a week-long training. In the mean time I’ve been able to sign-up for other training opportunities including Guard School, chainsaw training, and new employee orientation in Bend.
All of these experiences in just two months have been wonderful. I’m already gaining so much knowledge and becoming accustomed to how the Forest Service operates while having a great time doing it. These past couple of months have been amazing and I can’t wait to continue and take in all that the rest of my service year has to offer!
