My name is Delbert Henson. I was originally born in southern California but then moved to a small town called Yreka in northern California. I grew up in a large family playing football, basketball and running track. We were always an active family doing outside activities like camping, fishing and lots of hiking. I believe that because of how I was raised I naturally grew a love for the outdoors. I decided that right out of high school I would join the Marines with one of my good friends. I chose to be a field radio operator, but I knew it wasn’t the perfect job for me. I did over 4 years in the Marines, with a majority of that being spent at MARSOC as a SOCS-C on the East Coast. I’ve always loved the outdoors and knew I wanted to get back to doing the things I love such as fishing, hiking and camping. I left active duty in November 2023 with the intent of spending as much time as I could outside.
I was told about the Mt. Adams Institute AmeriCorps internship through my sister and it sounded like a dream. I have a huge love for the outdoors and believe it was one of the most influential pieces of my childhood. I love teaching others about the outdoors and the importance it has in everyday living. I have always had a strong desire to teach but even more so to learn. I am truly excited to learn more about nature and to meet new people along the way.
