My name is Hugo Rosa Castillo. I grew up in a small town on the coast of Oregon named Gold Beach. During my childhood, I was involved in the local sports programs and played football, track, and basketball during high school. On my time off from school, I spent lots of time on the river and in the mountains, exploring and hanging out with friends. As I grew older, my love for the outdoors only expanded as I had the ability to travel and see new states and countries. Whether hiking, mountain biking, camping, or snowshoeing- essentially, if it is something outside- I will be there! Following high school, I attended Linn Benton Community College and earned my AS degree in Automotive Technology. After college, I enlisted in the Marine Corps and was an aviation mechanic for five years at Camp Pendleton and Okinawa, Japan. My wife and our two dogs just recently relocated following both of our military careers to Central Oregon to be closer to all our favorite outdoor activities.

I decided to become an Mt. Adams Institute AmeriCorps Intern because I see it as an opportunity to get an inside look at what I hope will be my career in the future. Working with the Forest Service, specifically as a mechanic, aligns perfectly with my career goals. During my college years, I worked for the Forest Service during the summers as a wildland firefighter. This allowed me to have exposure to the FS, but I look forward to gaining experience from seasoned fleet mechanics and hopefully establishing a new fulfilling career after this program.
